There a number of different forms of energy in the oceans that could be harnessed for the generation of electricity, wave, tidal and salinity gradients. In this lecture these different types of energy will be explored, the technology to convert the energy to more useful forms, such as electricity, explained and the potential of ocean energy in South Africa identified. An objective assessment of these sources, when compared to other renewable energy resources will be presented and a possible scenario for South Africa presented.

Hotel Verde – Africa’s 1st Carbon Neutral Hotel Experience!

An overview of what it means to conceptualise, design and construct Africa’s Greenest Hotel is shared in this presentation by Andre Harms, Hotel Verde’s sustainability consultant responsible for the coordination and implementation of the entire concept. The water and energy conservation, waste minimisation, materials, indoor environmental quality, site sustainability, procurement were addressed and the impacts mitigated through passive design, policies and active systems. The property however believes that an efficient sustainable building is not enough but a holistic responsible hotel is very much dependent on a sustainable operation also. Principles, processes, solutions and technologies on all of the considered aspects will be discussed as well as how these are leveraged to set a benchmark in the hospitality industry and greater community. Given the resulting minimal resulting impact it was easy for Hotel Verde to implement a carbon offsetting programme which results in a completely carbon neutral accommodation or conference experience.

Presented byAndré Harms, Ecolution Consulting & Sustainability Consultant for Hotel Verde

André is an electro-mechanical engineer, Green Star accredited professional as well as a Qualified Commissioning Process Provider. In 2011, AndrAndré founded Ecolution Consulting, a consultancy practice specialized in sustainability and green building design & construction.

He’s responsible for the success of Hotel Verde, Africa’s greenest hotel, for which he conceptualised and coordinated the whole sustainability project. The hotel was the first one in Africa to earn prestigious Platinum LEED certification for New Construction, and won also several international awards such as the Eco-Logic awards (twice, in 2013 for Water Saving and 2014 for Energy Saving) and the Internorga Award (in 2014, in the Trendsetter category).

Previous to that project, André spent 14 months in Antarctica as mechanical engineer and team leader of the South African National Antarctic Expedition’s overwintering team.

A call for action for energy – A SANEA event 6 November, 2014

EE Publishers, 26 September, 2014.

The South African National Energy Association (SANEA) is hosting an open dialogue on the effective implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP) on 6 November 2014 at the Indaba Hotel, Fourways, Gauteng. The all-day event, dubbed the SANEA Action for Energy 2014, seeks to identify the areas where industry and government can work together to resolve bottlenecks and facilitate productive energy development. The energy chapter of the NDP has set a high level agenda, but it has left the development of the detail of implementation to government departments and industry to take forward.
